// From Zack — Founder, CEO & Superintelligence SME · Everything on this website created by Zaki Qayoumi aka Zack
What's up, everybody! It's Thursday / Jeudi, April / Avril 30, 2026. Today we discuss Medicine! As always, my four major topics: Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome — which I suffer from and raise awareness about, having been discriminated against in my love life and work life because of it; Bipolar Syndrome — same story; Music Therapy; and Videogames as Therapeutic. Don't forget my life-saving hashtag: #VaccinesSaveLives. You do not want to suffer from #COVID19 — ask any #LongCOVID patient. The flu is going around. Be careful with RSV and Norovirus. Always wash your hands, especially if you're handling diapers. To everyone working in a hospital today — I'm thinking of you while I drink my cup of Coffee! ^_^ Everything on this website is produced independently by me — Zaki Qayoumi, aka Zack.

#VaccinesSaveLives · Protect yourself from #COVID19 and #LongCOVID · Flu & RSV season — stay vigilant · Wash your hands · To all hospital workers: thank you. 🩺

Participate in the EDS and HSD Biobank Research Study — May 4–8, 2026 | Los Angeles, California
The Ehlers-Danlos Society's Global EDS and HSD Biobank is collecting biological samples and health information from individuals with different health backgrounds this May in Los Angeles. This research directly supports advances in understanding Ehlers-Danlos syndromes (EDS) and hypermobility spectrum disorders (HSD).
I suffer from Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome myself — that is precisely why I raise awareness about this illness every week. I have been discriminated against in my love life and in my professional life because of EDS. I am still awaiting disability paperwork approval that should have been processed years ago. This kind of research is essential, and I urge anyone who can participate to do so. Science needs your data to build better futures for people like me.
☕ Bipolar Disorder — New Research: Coffee & Journaling
☕ COFFEE & BIPOLAR — BMJ MENTAL HEALTH · APRIL 2026BMJ Mental Health / University College Cork / Gemini AI Research Summary
Coffee: New Research Reveals Surprising Benefits for People with Bipolar Disorder
New research from early 2026 and late 2025 has highlighted some surprising benefits of coffee for managing bipolar disorder, moving beyond the traditional view of caffeine as purely a trigger.
☕ The Telomere / Biological Age Finding
Two major studies published in BMJ Mental Health (November 2025, discussed through April 2026) found a specific cellular benefit to moderate coffee consumption:
3–4
Cups per day Optimal range
436
Adults studied incl. Bipolar patients
−5 yrs
Biological age benefit (est.)
J
Curve pattern — benefit disappears >4 cups
Telomere Preservation: Drinking 3 to 4 cups of coffee per day was linked to longer telomeres — the protective caps on DNA strands. Longer telomeres are associated with slower cellular aging.
Anti-Aging Effect: The study suggests this level of consumption could represent a biological age 5 years younger than non-coffee drinkers — significant because severe mental illness is often associated with accelerated cellular aging.
The J-Curve Limit: The benefit follows a J-shaped pattern. Once consumption exceeds 4 cups, the protective effect vanishes and telomere length actually decreases.
🦠 The Gut-Brain Axis Connection
New research from April 2026 (University College Cork) suggests coffee's benefits are not just about caffeine, but about the gut microbiome and its interaction with the brain:
Mood Regulation: Both caffeinated and decaffeinated coffee were found to lower perceived stress and impulsivity — suggesting it is the coffee's polyphenols, not just caffeine, doing the work.
Anxiety & Vigilance: Only caffeinated coffee was linked to reduced anxiety and improved attention, likely through polyphenol interactions with the gut-brain axis.
"The gut-brain axis may be the hidden mechanism behind coffee's mood benefits — opening new territory for understanding how diet intersects with bipolar management."
⚠️ Clinical Caution
Clinical advice remains that caffeine should be managed carefully for individuals with bipolar disorder. While the 3–4 cups study shows biological benefits, the primary clinical concern remains sleep stability and mood cycle regulation. Always consult your psychiatrist or care team before adjusting caffeine intake.
📓 JOURNALING & POSITIVE SELF-TALK — 2026 RESEARCH UPDATESUniversity of Exeter / Clinical Psychology Research / Gemini AI Summary
Journaling: Three Cognitive and Emotional Tools That Are Changing Bipolar Care
Journaling continues to be a cornerstone of supplemental bipolar treatment, with 2026 research updates focusing specifically on Positive Self-Talk Journaling — a structured approach that goes well beyond simple diary-keeping.
1
Pattern Recognition & Emotional Distance
Recent guides emphasize journaling not just for venting, but for benefit-finding. This involves writing about a setback and explicitly identifying what lessons or positive outcomes emerged. For those with bipolar disorder, this builds critical "emotional distance" from intrusive thoughts — one of the most powerful tools for preventing depressive spiral or manic escalation.
2
Positive Self-Talk Integration
A study published in late 2025 demonstrated that combining journaling with positive self-talk significantly improved psychological well-being. The method involves first identifying cognitive distortions ("untrue stories" — e.g., "I'm always the source of drama"), then actively reframing those thoughts with evidence-based affirmations written directly in the journal entry.
3
The "Balancing Act" Routine
Qualitative research from the University of Exeter highlights a "Strategic Routine" — using journaling to track how caffeine affects mood specifically. Lower mood: use a small amount of coffee as a gentle "helper." Higher mood: proactively reduce caffeine and use journaling to "burn off" racing thoughts before they escalate toward mania. Combining both tools thoughtfully may be more powerful than either alone.
"The combination of journaling and positive self-talk is not soft self-help. It is a clinically validated tool that changes the neurochemistry of thought — for people managing bipolar disorder, that can be life-altering."
🎮 Video Games as Therapeutic — Digital Therapeutics (DTx)
🎮 DIGITAL THERAPEUTICS — JOHNS HOPKINS · MEDXRIV · APRIL 2026Johns Hopkins Psychiatry / medRxiv / Frontiers in Psychology / Gemini AI Research Summary
Video Games as Medicine: April 2026 Research Confirms Therapeutic Benefits Across Multiple Conditions
Recent medical research from April 2026 continues to validate the efficacy of specialized video games as digital therapeutics (DTx) for mental health and neurodevelopmental conditions. The key finding across all studies: therapeutic benefits are most pronounced in games specifically designed with clinical mechanisms — not general entertainment titles.
🧠 Pediatric Mental Health: ADHD & Depression
A cumulative study published in late March 2026 by researchers at Johns Hopkins' Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences found that clinically designed video games significantly benefit teens with ADHD and depression:
Sustained Attention: Participants and their families reported improved focus and a reduction in sadness following use of therapy-informed games.
Accessibility: These tools are increasingly viewed as "first-step" interventions that can be delivered at home while families wait for face-to-face therapy — critical given long mental health waitlists.
The Design Caveat: Commercial games like Fortnite or Minecraft did not produce the same clinical benefits as those with baked-in therapeutic concepts. Design intention matters.

🔬 Digital Therapeutics & Addiction Safety
A major randomized controlled trial (RCT) published in medRxiv (March/April 2026) addressed a long-standing concern — whether long-term use of video game therapeutics could lead to gaming addiction. The results were decisive:
Safety Profile: Examining the video game therapeutic Meliora for major depressive disorder, researchers found no evidence of increased gaming-related problems after 12 weeks of use.
Inverse Correlation: In many cases, scores on the Gaming Addiction Scale (GAS-7) actually decreased during the intervention.
Immersion vs. Addiction: The study concluded that "subjective immersion" — the feeling of being in the game — is distinct from problematic or addictive gaming. Engagement is not the same as dependency.
Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD): A meta-analysis published in PMC evaluated gamified interventions for children with ASD, noting significant improvements in emotional skills (SMD = 0.56) and executive function (SMD = −0.43). Sensor-based games were particularly effective for motor skills.
Stroke Recovery & Dementia: New preprints from late April 2026 — including the HEROES exergame — explore VR and exergaming for at-home balance training during stroke recovery and cognitive training for dementia.
Emotion Regulation: A comparative study in Frontiers in Psychology (April 15, 2026) demonstrated that Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) can successfully improve emotion regulation in adolescents who struggle with digital addiction.
"We are at the beginning of a genuine paradigm shift: video games, designed with clinical intention, are becoming a legitimate first-line mental health intervention — accessible, engaging, and clinically validated."

💉 Public Health Reminders
💉 PUBLIC HEALTH — FROM ZACKZACK TECHNOLOGY LLC Editorial
Stay Safe, Stay Vaccinated — A Message from Zack
Every Thursday Medicine Edition, I use this platform not just for research but for public health advocacy. Here is my standing message:
#VaccinesSaveLives — Please stay up to date on your vaccinations. COVID-19, flu, RSV — these are real threats with real consequences. Ask any Long COVID patient what they wish they had done differently.
#LongCOVID is real, serious, and life-altering for millions. Do not dismiss COVID-19 as mild. Prevention is always better than treatment.
Flu season — The flu is circulating. Get vaccinated if you haven't. Antiviral medications work but only if taken early.
RSV and Norovirus — Both are circulating. Practice good hygiene especially around young children and elderly family members.
Wash your hands — The single most effective disease prevention intervention known to science. Especially if you are handling diapers, preparing food, or working in healthcare.
"If you work in a hospital today — I'm thinking of you while I drink my cup of Coffee. You are the real heroes of our world. Thank you. ^_^"

💛 A Personal Note from Zack
As I've explained in the past, this work would be much easier if I had my privacy and my own apartment again. If everything goes well, later this Summer or Fall, I may finally move back into a Studio, 1-bedroom, or 2-bedroom apartment — and I cannot wait for my privacy again. I plan on creating a special room just for livestreaming. If I have the budget, I'll join Twitch and livestream simultaneously on both YouTube and Twitch. My next longform article will be released this week — it will be on Sudan. Thanks for reading, thanks for listening, and don't forget: we're almost in the month of May — which means "IT'S GONNA BE MAY" (Justin Timberlake) — which means my birthday! 🎂 The Barnes & Noble Elk Grove Store opens in just one more month, in June 2026. Let's hope the "You've Got Mail Trilogy" is not just a fantasy, but becomes reality for all you fans of the movie. As for myself, I need to read Boruto: The Twin Vortex Manga, and books on World Affairs, International Studies, Affaires Étrangères, and Diplomacy — because the world is on fire, and Diplomats around the planet must use backchannels to save our precious Earth. 🌍

Iran Offers Hormuz Deal Without Nuclear Talks, as It Seeks Broader Buy-In
Tehran has signaled willingness to discuss the Strait of Hormuz separately from nuclear negotiations — a significant diplomatic decoupling that reflects Iran's attempt to build a wider coalition of stakeholders while keeping its nuclear program off the table. A pivotal moment in an already volatile standoff with major consequences for global shipping, energy markets, and U.S. foreign policy.
Trump Is Dissatisfied With Iran's Plan to Reopen Strait of Hormuz
President Trump has publicly expressed dissatisfaction with Iran's Hormuz proposal, signaling the gap between Tehran and Washington remains wide. The diplomatic temperature continues to rise.
The New Yorker offers a sobering analysis: whichever direction these Iran negotiations go, the structural dynamics appear to trap all parties in a deteriorating situation with no obvious exit ramp.

// FROM THE DESK OF ZACK
What's up, everybody! It's Saturday / Samedi, April (Avril) 25, 2026 — the weekend! I hope you are enjoying some great sports. As for myself, I have to wait until early next week for Manchester United to have their football match. It's an important one — we need to remain in the Top 3 of the English Premier League and guarantee Champions League football for next season, which would make everybody at Old Trafford very happy.
Stay tuned to my YouTube channel in case I am livestreaming PlayStation 5 games. And as always, we will do a DJ Listening Party for JETLAG RADIO 4439 — Part I was last night, Part II is tonight. Everything on this website is produced independently by me — Zack Qayoumi.
💛 A Personal Note from Zack
Ladies, I'm single and looking for a girlfriend — whether short-term, or preferably, long-term. You can find me on Boo the App (username: IAMZAKI) or on Tinder. I really want to celebrate a day in May 2026 with a special woman. I'd be especially interested if you speak English, French, and a bit of Japanese — and if you love Technology, World Affairs, Electronic Music, and Diplomacy. If you care for Mental Health and Music Therapy, dream about working at the State Department or le Quai d'Orsay, and love videogames, we might just be a perfect match. See you soon, hopefully. 🤞 PS — I didn't make it to the coffee shop this week, but I did go to the movies solo (it was awesome!), had Chick-Fil-A, and wished I had a lovely date. Ladies, if you need a companion for Devil Wears Prada 2 — I'm your guy, but you're covering the movie and food. 😄 And we cannot wait for #HaroldAndKumar4!

Tiga: The Electroclash Legend Behind the Curtain of 'HOTLIFE'
Mixmag's Mix 103 puts the spotlight on Tiga — the Canadian electroclash luminary who helped define a generation's sonic identity. In conversation with Megan Townsend, Tiga goes behind the scenes of his album HOTLIFE, reflects on collaborations, the ongoing electroclash revival, and wrestles with whether he's finally ready to accept the word "legend." The answer, characteristically, is complicated. Essential reading for anyone who's ever danced to "Sunglasses at Night" at 3am.
Beatportal also crowns Tiga as its Artist of the Month — a well-deserved double spotlight for the Montreal-born artist. His influence on the intersection of electro, house, and art-pop is incalculable. If you don't have HOTLIFE queued, fix that immediately.
Pat Lok & F-MACK Are CŒUR ACIDE on 'Touch Me (All Night Long)'
The collaboration between Pat Lok and F-MACK under the project name CŒUR ACIDE — that's "acid heart" for the non-Francophones — drops "Touch Me (All Night Long)." The French-language project name alone has my full attention. This one's got heat.
Martin Garrix Turns Childhood Dreams Into Reality on 2026 Americas Tour

32 Years of Illmatic — Nas's Album That Redefined What Rap Could Be
Nas released Illmatic 32 years ago today — and it remains, without serious debate, one of the most perfectly constructed rap albums ever recorded. Ten tracks. No filler. A 19-year-old from Queensbridge narrating the weight of his world with the precision of a poet and the authority of a veteran. Thirty-two years later, it still sounds like the future. Happy anniversary to a genuine masterpiece. 🙏

"Thirty-two years after Illmatic, hip-hop remains the most consequential art form of our era — capable of documenting a world that other genres dare not look at directly."
🎬 Music & Film Culture
🎬 The Michael Jackson Biopic — And What It Leaves Out
The Michael Jackson biopic Michael is now in theaters — and I for one am looking forward to watching it. Early reviews have been strong, and the film promises to revisit one of the most extraordinary careers in music history. Rolling Stone, however, dives into an important contextual note: an early storyline involving abuse allegations was removed from the film following legal constraints tied to a prior settlement. It's worth reading that piece before you go. Great art and complicated legacy can — and in this case, must — coexist. I'll bring you my full take after I've seen it.
GQ
Speed Racer Was So Ahead of Its Time — Cinema Still Hasn't Caught Up
GQ revisits the Wachowskis' misunderstood 2008 masterpiece Speed Racer on the occasion of its re-release, arguing — correctly — that its hyper-saturated visual language and anime-faithful aesthetic were simply too early for mainstream audiences. As someone with deep love for Japanese animation and JDM culture, I could not agree more. This film deserves its second chance.
MOJO's June 2026 edition crowns Joni Mitchell, one of the most enduring voices in recorded music. Her comeback after serious illness has been one of the most moving stories in music over the past several years. A cover she deserves many times over.
A 25% discount on all versions of Ableton Live 12 is live right now. At 4.5 stars and the industry standard for electronic music production, this is a deal worth acting on quickly. If you've been waiting for a reason to upgrade your studio setup, this is it. Tell every producer you know.

The Iran War Is Morphing Into Something New — And More Dangerous
The conflict in Iran isn't winding down — it's evolving. With the Strait of Hormuz still in play and nuclear questions unresolved, Vox reports that the regional calculus is shifting in ways that defy easy categorization. A nominal ceasefire has not translated into stability, and the downstream consequences — for Gulf shipping, global energy markets, and U.S. strategic posture — remain deeply uncertain. The piece is required reading for anyone tracking the Middle East's most volatile flashpoint.
🇵🇸 The Wound That Will Not Close: Gaza's Enduring Catastrophe
Seventy-five thousand confirmed dead. A sitting prime minister carrying an ICC arrest warrant. A world that has largely averted its gaze. 🇦🇫 The Abandoned Nation: Afghanistan Under the Taliban

Amazon has announced an investment of up to $25 billion in Anthropic — the company behind Claude — as the AI arms race between Big Tech titans accelerates. It's one of the most compelling proof-of-concept demonstrations of AI-assisted software engineering to date — and a preview of how open-source development could be fundamentally reshaped.
Trump Floats Anthropic Pentagon Deal — Weeks After Blacklisting It
In a remarkable reversal, President Trump has suggested that a Pentagon deal with Anthropic is "possible" — just weeks after the administration had flagged the company as a national security concern. The about-face underscores the chaotic and often contradictory posture of the current U.S. government toward frontier AI companies. Make it make sense.

Intel Launches Core Series 3: Everyday Computing, Redefined
Intel has officially launched its new Core Series 3 processors, targeting the mainstream market with improved efficiency and performance for everyday workloads. The launch represents Intel's continued push to reclaim relevance in a segment increasingly contested by AMD and ARM-based alternatives. For consumers, the message is clear: capable computing doesn't have to mean flagship prices. Intel's execution in this tier will be closely watched by analysts and OEM partners alike.
"Changing the game for everyday computing" — Intel's own words for the Core Series 3 launch. The bar has been raised.

A reminder of how small we are, and how vast the cosmos remains.
Friends, I'll be honest with you: I'm stuck on the Goblu boss in Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, and I need all the help and walkthroughs I can get. Wish me luck — because once I've cracked this fight, we're going LIVE on PS5. Here's what the community knows about beating this formidable Nevron:
⚡ WEAKNESS: Goblu is weak to Lightning damage. Stack lightning skills — use Gustave's Overcharge and Lune's Thunderfall for massive burst damage. Go aggressive early.
🌸 THE FLOWER MECHANIC: Goblu grows flowers throughout the fight. Shoot the glowing weak points on blue flowers to close them — they grant Goblu shields when absorbed. Red flowers fuel its damage buff. Prioritize shooting flowers with a dedicated character to keep AP in check.
🛡️ TWO SHIELDS AT START: Goblu opens with 2 shields. Use Free Aim shots to break them fast, or note that status ailments from Lune's Immolation and Maelle's Spark still apply through them.
🦘 JUMP ATTACK TIMING: Goblu leaps, hangs in the air briefly, then bounces three times. Use the audio cue for timing — the third bounce has a deliberate delay. Don't mash that parry button early.
💥 CRUSH ATTACK (LATE FIGHT): After absorbing flowers, Goblu can one-shot party members with a brutal slam. A whooshing sound telegraphs it. At that point, all-in on burning down HP — don't chase flowers anymore, just go for the kill.
🗡️ MAELLE'S PERCÉE: This skill can take out roughly a third of Goblu's health in one hit. Coordinate with Lune and Gustave's lightning for a devastating combo round.
🍀 Please wish me luck, everyone! I'm resuming Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 on PS5, embarking on my quest to finally take down Goblu — and I will be livestreaming the journey. Wait for me… I'm coming. 🎮

It's April 20, 2026 — and the feed today is extraordinary: AI oligarchs, a seized Iranian ship, Gaza's $71 billion price tag, a quantum physics prize, and Tim Cook stepping down from Apple. Plus: Major Dad. On Tubi. For free. Let's get into it.
From the Archives — Zack Technology LLC Longreads
My Recent Major Term Papers — All Live on the Website
As you may have noticed, Coffee with Zack and Coffee with Zaki have been on a two-week hiatus. The reason? I've been heads-down producing over a dozen longform editorial pieces. They're all live on the website now — go read them at your leisure. Here are the two flagships:
Tim Cook Steps Down at Apple — John Ternus Takes the Helm
The biggest tech story in years: Apple CEO Tim Cook is stepping down. He will be replaced by John Ternus, Apple's Senior Vice President of Hardware Engineering. Cook's tenure reshaped Apple from a computer company into the world's most valuable enterprise — iPhone, Apple Watch, AirPods, services, and the silicon transition to Apple-designed chips. Ternus is a hardware man through and through, which says something about where Apple sees its future: in devices, chips, and physical computing. A seismic transition for the most important consumer technology company on Earth.
Zack Technology LLC Take
Tim Cook's Apple was defined by discipline, supply chain mastery, and product polish. Ternus brings deep hardware credibility at a moment when Apple's silicon strategy and Vision Pro spatial computing bet need an engineering champion at the top. This is Apple betting on atoms over bits — at least for now. Watch this space closely.
Artificial Intelligence — Governance
Five Men Control AI — Who Should Control Them?
The Economist's Insider asks the most important question in technology right now: five individuals — Altman, Musk, Zuckerberg, Pichai, Bezos, take your pick — control the AI systems that are reshaping civilisation. There are no democratic mandates, no international treaties, no meaningful accountability mechanisms. As a Superintelligence SME who has read Nick Bostrom's foundational work on this subject, I cannot overstate how urgently the world needs to confront this question. The AI governance vacuum is not theoretical. It is happening now, at scale, in products billions of people use every day.

US military budget — and Washington is still scrapping key defense programs (Bloomberg: GPS satellite control cancelled)
Separately: Deezer reports that 44% of songs uploaded to its platform daily are now AI-generated. As someone who focuses on electronic music and music therapy — and who cares deeply about the emotional and therapeutic power of authentic human creativity — this number is both fascinating and alarming. AI-generated music is not inherently bad. But if nearly half the music uploaded to a major platform is machine-made, the question of what music means becomes urgent. Music therapy works because of human intention, vulnerability, and emotional truth. Machines do not grieve. They do not heal. Not yet.
World Affairs — Iran & Middle East
The Iran War and America's Fracturing World Position
Politico's headline says it plainly: the Iran war is accelerating America's breakup with the world. The US seizure of an Iranian ship (covered on The Economist's Intelligence podcast) is the latest in a sequence of escalations that have left traditional allies confused, adversaries emboldened, and the rules-based international order looking increasingly like a selective convenience rather than a genuine framework. Pakistan, meanwhile, is seeking to raise its global standing as a mediator in US-Iran talks — a remarkable repositioning for a country usually defined by its own regional anxieties.
Nuclear Non-Proliferation — A Reminder
The Bulletin of Atomic Scientists makes a point that should not need making: Washington needs to be reminded of the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty. In a moment of maximum geopolitical tension with Iran — a country whose nuclear program is the ostensible casus belli — the United States' own compliance with its NPT obligations deserves scrutiny. International law is not a menu from which powerful states may order selectively.
On Gaza: a new report finds that Gaza will need more than $71 billion in reconstruction funding over the next decade. Six months into the ceasefire, phase two of Trump's "peace plan" remains, per Le Monde, entirely in limbo. Saudi Arabia is recalculating its position as the Iran war reshapes the Gulf's balance of power. And an Israeli soldier's desecration of a crucifix in South Lebanon drew international condemnation — a small symbol, but symbols matter, particularly in a region where religious identity and political legitimacy are inseparable.
Afghanistan — Never Forgotten
23 Million Afghans Need Humanitarian Aid — UNICEF
UNICEF reports that 23 million people in Afghanistan require humanitarian assistance. This number appeared in Afghanistan International this week. It will not appear on most front pages. As someone of Afghan heritage who has written extensively on this crisis — including a full longform piece available on this website and a book available on Amazon Kindle — I ask you to hold this number alongside Gaza's $71 billion headline. Both crises are real. Both deserve attention. The world's attention is not a zero-sum resource, even when the media treats it as one.
Science & Physics
The Muon Wins the Breakthrough Prize — A Moment for Physics
Congratulations to the Muon g-2 Collaboration — CERN, Brookhaven Lab, and Fermilab — winners of the 2026 Breakthrough Prize in Fundamental Physics. Their decades-long, groundbreaking measurement of the muon's anomalous magnetic moment has pushed the boundaries of experimental precision and ignited a new era in the quest for physics beyond the Standard Model. This is the kind of science that makes you remember why humans are extraordinary. We build machines to measure the magnetic wobble of a subatomic particle to 15 decimal places, and that wobble doesn't match our best theory of the universe. Something is out there that we don't understand yet. Science is how we find it.
Also in science this week: Quanta Magazine asks what physical "life force" turns biology's wheels — a fascinating deep dive into the biophysics of how living systems maintain their improbable order. And a startup claims it can stop lightning and prevent catastrophic wildfires, via MIT Technology Review. Given what California has experienced in recent years, I'm paying close attention.
Culture & Games — Chess & Go
Chinese Go Master Nie Passes Away & Board Game Affiliate Picks
Chinese Go master Nie Weiping has passed away at 73. Go is one of the oldest and most profound strategic games in human history — more complex than chess in its combinatorics, and a game that has served as a benchmark for AI development (DeepMind's AlphaGo being the landmark moment). Nie was a giant of the game. His legacy belongs to Asia's cultural heritage and to the global community of strategic game players. Rest in peace.
On that note, two affiliate picks for the board game enthusiasts in the audience:
🛒 Amazon Affiliate Pick — Chess
Millennium ChessGenius Pro M815
Electronic chess computer with 2200 ELO adaptive AI, colour display, built-in trainer, and magnetic travel design. Serious chess in a portable package.
Jackson, the Senate, and the Republic's Fragile Institutions
Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson continues to be a voice of judicial conscience on the Supreme Court, calling out what she sees as needless interventions by the Court's majority. The Atlantic argues that Trump failed what it calls "the 3 A.M. test" — the moment of crisis that reveals character. The New York Times reports that a Democratic Senate, once unthinkable, is now a real possibility heading into the midterms. And in a story that encapsulates the contradictions of American immigration policy: the wife of an active US Army sergeant faces deportation to a third country. These stories belong together. They tell you something about the republic's values — or its failure to live up to them.
The America at 250 feature in The Economist is worth your time this week. Two and a half centuries in, the republic is neither as broken as its critics fear nor as resilient as its champions claim. It is exactly as complicated as it has always been — which is, in its own exhausting way, a kind of continuity.
Mental Health & Wellbeing
On Ambition, Unemployment, and Sitting with Your Own Thoughts
"Ambition is wonderful until it becomes the voice that tells you you're never doing enough. The goal is not to silence it — it's to make it your collaborator, not your critic."
— Zaki, Founder & CEO, Zack Technology LLC
Three pieces this week for the mental health and emotional support corner of the dispatch. Harvard Business Review asks: when does your ambition start to exhaust you? It's a question I sit with daily — building something from nothing since 2014, including eight years without a salary, requires a relationship with ambition that is sustainable, not self-destructive. Vox offers a guide on how to make unemployment suck a little less, which is genuinely useful and kind. And the Washington Post explores why we can't sit alone with our thoughts anymore — excessive audio use, addictive screen time, and the modern flight from silence. As someone who advocates for music therapy, I think about this constantly. Sometimes the most therapeutic thing you can do is turn everything off.
Personal — The Jaw Chronicles
Still recovering from the walnut situation. Still on smoothies. Still cannot have a Chipotle Burrito. The jaw is improving but slowly. I can talk, I can stream, I can write. And I just found out Major Dad is on Tubi for free — the CBS sitcom I grew up watching. If you've never seen it, now is a perfect time. Gerald McRaney. A Marine general. Three teenage stepdaughters. It's perfect television. Go watch it at tubitv.com while I eat soup and celebrate this unexpected gift.
Culture & Science
BookCon Returns, a New Comet, and Electronic Music Under Siege
BookCon is back for the first time in six years — Mashable has the preview. For anyone who reads (and you should), this is a wonderful cultural moment. A newly spotted comet has stargazers excited, per National Geographic. And from VICE: ravers describe what actually happened when EggTek was violently shut down by police — a reminder that electronic music culture and its communities continue to face disproportionate policing and cultural hostility. The rave is not a crime. It is a community. It is therapy. It matters.

Seeking a Salary Career Position — Senior Project Manager & Versatile Tech Leader
I am actively seeking a remote or hybrid salary career position in project management, technology strategy, content leadership, or AI/intelligence advisory. I did not graduate from Ohio State and work over a decade in corporate for nothing. Eight years of unpaid independent work building Zack Technology LLC from the ground up is also experience — arguably the hardest kind. If you're hiring at any of the following companies, or you know someone who is: let's talk. Investors, VCs, and Angel Investors interested in Zack Technology LLC are equally welcome.
✕ Facebook / Meta excluded — on the record, for documented reasons.
Personal — A Note for the Ladies
I'm on Tinder now. I'd prefer a long-term relationship but I'm open. Don't fall for fake accounts — if we're texting, my number includes 444 and it's a San Francisco area code. I still live in Sacramento but I'm hoping to get closer to the Bay Area's VC and Angel Investor ecosystem. Sacramento is wonderful. The Bay is where the capital flows. And yes, I can have a dinner date just as soon as my jaw finishes recovering from that walnut.

It's Saturday. The sports world is on fire, Imola is roaring, Manchester United somehow won at Chelsea, and Coachella Weekend 2 is happening without me — which is fine because my jaw still hates me. Welcome to the dispatch.
Happy Saturday, everybody — Bon samedi! It's April 18, 2026, and there is genuinely a lot going on this weekend. We've got motorsport at Imola for the FIA WEC 6 Hours, Premier League football drama, NBA playoffs heating up, Ohio State doing Ohio State things, and I — your founder — am recovering from a walnut-induced jaw situation and livestreaming from the couch like a professional. Let's get into it.
Personal Update — The Walnut Chronicles Continue
The jaw is still not great. Eating a walnut should not be a medical event, and yet here we are. I'm still on soup, apple sauce, and smoothies. A Chipotle Burrito remains a dream deferred — possibly until the FIFA World Cup. Gift cards are deeply appreciated and spiritually necessary. On the bright side: I can talk, I can stream, and the PS5 does not require chewing. We persist.
To everyone watching Coachella Weekend 2 on YouTube today — I am genuinely envious of your snacks and drinks. Please enjoy them on my behalf. Your watch party setup sounds amazing and I hope the livestream quality holds up. Stay safe, have fun, and remember: hydrate.
Motorsport — FIA WEC Imola
Ferrari on Pole at Home — Imola Goes Off
The 6 Hours of Imola is the kind of race that reminds you why endurance motorsport is the most underrated spectacle in sport. Ferrari's Giovinazzi topped a scintillating Hyperpole shootout on the Scuderia's home soil — the Italian crowd was absolutely electric. Peugeot's 9X8 #94 qualifies in fourth, a solid result for a car that continues to develop. Alpine Endurance Team kicks off its 2026 Hypercar campaign at Imola, a new chapter for a team with everything to prove at the top level. And meanwhile the Ford Mustang GTD Competition broke Nürburgring records again — at some point the Germans are going to have to accept that an American muscle car now owns their most famous circuit.
Football — Premier League & Ligue 1
Carrick's United Silence the Doubters at Stamford Bridge
Against all odds and apparently against most of their defenders being available, Manchester United beat Chelsea 1–0 at Stamford Bridge. Michael Carrick called his players' attitude "absolutely immense" — which is manager-speak for "we had no right to win that game and somehow did anyway." United are now closing in on Champions League qualification, which, given where they were six months ago, is a minor miracle. Chelsea fans will be processing that one for a while.
Meanwhile, the Premier League's real title picture comes into focus this weekend with Arsenal heading to Manchester City. That fixture has the energy of a season-defining moment. PSG hosts Lyon in Ligue 1 in what promises to be a classic French top-flight showdown. OM takes on Nice, Stade Rochelais demolished Union Bordeaux Belges 45–15 in rugby, and France Rugby had their Six Nations fixture against Wales.
Basketball — NBA Playoffs
Harden Changes Everything as Cavs Hold Off Raptors
The Cleveland Cavaliers won Game 1 against the Toronto Raptors 132–126, and thirteen takeaways later the story is simple: James Harden changes everything. When Harden is making plays, the Cavs are a different team. Donovan Mitchell and Jarrett Allen were also key contributors. In the other series to watch, Portland's Toumani Camara is set to play a key role against the Spurs — which means Wembanyama vs. the Trail Blazers is must-watch television.
Baseball — MLB
Reds Rally Past Twins 5–4
The Cincinnati Reds found a way — rallying for a 5–4 win over the Minnesota Twins. Eugenio Suárez was involved, a Tony Santillan save sealed it. Red Reporter is very pleased. As a sports fan with a jaw situation preventing me from eating anything exciting, I appreciate a good comeback story.
College Sports — Ohio State
Buckeyes Being Buckeyes — Spring Game & Lacrosse Title
🎾 Ohio State University Alumni — Go Bucks!
Two great Buckeye stories this weekend. First: Ohio State's defense outdueled the offense in the 2026 Spring Game — which is exactly the kind of thing that makes Ohio State fans simultaneously nervous and excited heading into the fall. Second, and perhaps more dramatically: Ohio State wins the Big Ten Men's Lacrosse Regular Season Championship with a last-second 9–8 victory over Michigan. A last-second win over Michigan. In any sport. There is genuinely no better feeling in the state of Ohio. #GoBucks.
Formula 1
F1 Academy Champion Pin Tests with Mercedes at Silverstone
F1 Academy Champion Pin completed her maiden Formula 1 test with Mercedes at Silverstone this week. Moments like this matter. The pathway from junior series to the top level of motorsport is something the sport has needed to build seriously, and seeing a champion get meaningful track time in a proper F1 car is progress worth celebrating.
IGN dropped the official Assassin's Creed Evolution of Combat gameplay trailer and honestly it's worth watching just for the choreography. The franchise's combat evolution across its history is genuinely impressive when you see it laid out. Speaking of gaming — I did several PS5 livestreams last night despite everything. Be sure to check them out on YouTube. Jaw pain cannot stop the stream. This is the way.
Pro Wrestling
WrestleMania 42 Night One is Live
WrestleMania 42 Night One results are coming in as we speak. The biggest show in professional wrestling is always an event — whether you're a lifelong fan or just someone who appreciates spectacular athletic storytelling, WrestleMania Night One is worth a watch.
Automotive & EV
Gas Prices Flip the EV Market — Hyundai Up 40%
Hyundai sales are up 40% as gas prices continue to make EV economics look better and better. The EV market is shifting in real time, and the brands that positioned early — Hyundai, Kia, and now increasingly others — are reaping the rewards. Separately: a Thomas Sieber video about a Porsche dealership being completely full is doing numbers, which tells you something about the state of luxury automotive demand even in this environment.
PS5 livestreams happened last night — several of them. Check them out on YouTube whether live or on replay. We need those videos to go viral heading into next month. Big things are coming, and the algorithm rewards attention. Subscribe, watch, share.
