What's up, everybody! It's Thursday / Jeudi, April / Avril 30, 2026. Today we discuss Medicine! As always, my four major topics: Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome — which I suffer from and raise awareness about, having been discriminated against in my love life and work life because of it; Bipolar Syndrome — same story; Music Therapy; and Videogames as Therapeutic. Don't forget my life-saving hashtag: #VaccinesSaveLives. You do not want to suffer from #COVID19 — ask any #LongCOVID patient. The flu is going around. Be careful with RSV and Norovirus. Always wash your hands, especially if you're handling diapers. To everyone working in a hospital today — I'm thinking of you while I drink my cup of Coffee! ^_^ Everything on this website is produced independently by me — Zaki Qayoumi, aka Zack.
Participate in the EDS and HSD Biobank Research Study — May 4–8, 2026 | Los Angeles, California
The Ehlers-Danlos Society's Global EDS and HSD Biobank is collecting biological samples and health information from individuals with different health backgrounds this May in Los Angeles. This research directly supports advances in understanding Ehlers-Danlos syndromes (EDS) and hypermobility spectrum disorders (HSD).
I suffer from Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome myself — that is precisely why I raise awareness about this illness every week. I have been discriminated against in my love life and in my professional life because of EDS. I am still awaiting disability paperwork approval that should have been processed years ago. This kind of research is essential, and I urge anyone who can participate to do so. Science needs your data to build better futures for people like me.
Learn More & RegisterCoffee: New Research Reveals Surprising Benefits for People with Bipolar Disorder
New research from early 2026 and late 2025 has highlighted some surprising benefits of coffee for managing bipolar disorder, moving beyond the traditional view of caffeine as purely a trigger.
☕ The Telomere / Biological Age Finding
Two major studies published in BMJ Mental Health (November 2025, discussed through April 2026) found a specific cellular benefit to moderate coffee consumption:
Optimal range
incl. Bipolar patients
benefit (est.)
benefit disappears >4 cups
- Telomere Preservation: Drinking 3 to 4 cups of coffee per day was linked to longer telomeres — the protective caps on DNA strands. Longer telomeres are associated with slower cellular aging.
- Anti-Aging Effect: The study suggests this level of consumption could represent a biological age 5 years younger than non-coffee drinkers — significant because severe mental illness is often associated with accelerated cellular aging.
- The J-Curve Limit: The benefit follows a J-shaped pattern. Once consumption exceeds 4 cups, the protective effect vanishes and telomere length actually decreases.
🦠 The Gut-Brain Axis Connection
New research from April 2026 (University College Cork) suggests coffee's benefits are not just about caffeine, but about the gut microbiome and its interaction with the brain:
- Mood Regulation: Both caffeinated and decaffeinated coffee were found to lower perceived stress and impulsivity — suggesting it is the coffee's polyphenols, not just caffeine, doing the work.
- Anxiety & Vigilance: Only caffeinated coffee was linked to reduced anxiety and improved attention, likely through polyphenol interactions with the gut-brain axis.
"The gut-brain axis may be the hidden mechanism behind coffee's mood benefits — opening new territory for understanding how diet intersects with bipolar management."
Clinical advice remains that caffeine should be managed carefully for individuals with bipolar disorder. While the 3–4 cups study shows biological benefits, the primary clinical concern remains sleep stability and mood cycle regulation. Always consult your psychiatrist or care team before adjusting caffeine intake.
Journaling: Three Cognitive and Emotional Tools That Are Changing Bipolar Care
Journaling continues to be a cornerstone of supplemental bipolar treatment, with 2026 research updates focusing specifically on Positive Self-Talk Journaling — a structured approach that goes well beyond simple diary-keeping.
"The combination of journaling and positive self-talk is not soft self-help. It is a clinically validated tool that changes the neurochemistry of thought — for people managing bipolar disorder, that can be life-altering."
Video Games as Medicine: April 2026 Research Confirms Therapeutic Benefits Across Multiple Conditions
Recent medical research from April 2026 continues to validate the efficacy of specialized video games as digital therapeutics (DTx) for mental health and neurodevelopmental conditions. The key finding across all studies: therapeutic benefits are most pronounced in games specifically designed with clinical mechanisms — not general entertainment titles.
🧠 Pediatric Mental Health: ADHD & Depression
A cumulative study published in late March 2026 by researchers at Johns Hopkins' Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences found that clinically designed video games significantly benefit teens with ADHD and depression:
- Sustained Attention: Participants and their families reported improved focus and a reduction in sadness following use of therapy-informed games.
- Accessibility: These tools are increasingly viewed as "first-step" interventions that can be delivered at home while families wait for face-to-face therapy — critical given long mental health waitlists.
- The Design Caveat: Commercial games like Fortnite or Minecraft did not produce the same clinical benefits as those with baked-in therapeutic concepts. Design intention matters.

🔬 Digital Therapeutics & Addiction Safety
A major randomized controlled trial (RCT) published in medRxiv (March/April 2026) addressed a long-standing concern — whether long-term use of video game therapeutics could lead to gaming addiction. The results were decisive:
- Safety Profile: Examining the video game therapeutic Meliora for major depressive disorder, researchers found no evidence of increased gaming-related problems after 12 weeks of use.
- Inverse Correlation: In many cases, scores on the Gaming Addiction Scale (GAS-7) actually decreased during the intervention.
- Immersion vs. Addiction: The study concluded that "subjective immersion" — the feeling of being in the game — is distinct from problematic or addictive gaming. Engagement is not the same as dependency.
🌐 Emerging Applications: ASD, Stroke Recovery, Dementia
- Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD): A meta-analysis published in PMC evaluated gamified interventions for children with ASD, noting significant improvements in emotional skills (SMD = 0.56) and executive function (SMD = −0.43). Sensor-based games were particularly effective for motor skills.
- Stroke Recovery & Dementia: New preprints from late April 2026 — including the HEROES exergame — explore VR and exergaming for at-home balance training during stroke recovery and cognitive training for dementia.
- Emotion Regulation: A comparative study in Frontiers in Psychology (April 15, 2026) demonstrated that Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) can successfully improve emotion regulation in adolescents who struggle with digital addiction.
"We are at the beginning of a genuine paradigm shift: video games, designed with clinical intention, are becoming a legitimate first-line mental health intervention — accessible, engaging, and clinically validated."

Stay Safe, Stay Vaccinated — A Message from Zack
Every Thursday Medicine Edition, I use this platform not just for research but for public health advocacy. Here is my standing message:
- #VaccinesSaveLives — Please stay up to date on your vaccinations. COVID-19, flu, RSV — these are real threats with real consequences. Ask any Long COVID patient what they wish they had done differently.
- #LongCOVID is real, serious, and life-altering for millions. Do not dismiss COVID-19 as mild. Prevention is always better than treatment.
- Flu season — The flu is circulating. Get vaccinated if you haven't. Antiviral medications work but only if taken early.
- RSV and Norovirus — Both are circulating. Practice good hygiene especially around young children and elderly family members.
- Wash your hands — The single most effective disease prevention intervention known to science. Especially if you are handling diapers, preparing food, or working in healthcare.
"If you work in a hospital today — I'm thinking of you while I drink my cup of Coffee. You are the real heroes of our world. Thank you. ^_^"
