🎗️ Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome & HSD Awareness

The Ehlers-Danlos Society

Listening Labs: The Lived Experience

For many people living with Ehlers-Danlos syndromes (EDS) or hypermobility spectrum disorders (HSD), diagnosis is only the beginning — the harder part is navigating care, being heard, finding support, and accessing joined-up services. The Ehlers-Danlos Society is inviting its community to take part in a series of Listening Labs as part of developing a new Model of Care for EDS and HSD. These structured virtual sessions offer a chance to share real experiences of seeking care — especially in primary care, where most journeys begin — helping identify what isn't working and what better care should look like.

🚴 The Tour de France as a Grounding Tool for Bipolar Disorder

Watching an elite three-week cycling grand tour isn't a medical treatment for bipolar disorder, but the experience of following the 2026 Tour de France can offer some real psychological benefits for mood stability and daily structure.

1. Daily Structure and Circadian Anchoring

  • Bipolar disorder is closely tied to disruptions in circadian rhythm and daily routine, so a predictable schedule matters for mood stability.
  • The Tour's 21 stages over roughly three weeks give viewers a fixed, comforting daily appointment — whether it's live coverage or catching up on highlights.
  • Pairing race-watching with a steady habit, like lunch at the same time or gentle stretching, reinforces daily rhythm.

2. Low-Stakes Engagement & Emotional Regulation

  • Grand tour cycling blends slow tactical buildup with short bursts of intensity, offering mental stimulation without real-world stakes or anxiety.
  • The long broadcast hours, scenic countryside, and steady commentary can provide a soothing ambiance on lower-energy days.

3. Vicarious Motivation

  • Watching riders push through difficult stages and recover afterward can echo the endurance and pacing that managing bipolar disorder often requires.
  • Seeing cyclists out on the open road can be a gentle, low-pressure nudge to move your own body — light activity is well documented to support mood alongside clinical care.

A gentle note on pacing: if late-night viewing starts interfering with sleep, recorded highlights are a better option — consistent sleep remains essential for mood regulation. And this kind of sports-watching works best as a complement to established clinical care (medication, therapy, routine tracking), not a replacement for it.

🎵 Road Trip Music Therapy

A long drive with a great soundtrack can become more than just background noise — applying therapeutic music principles turns a road trip into an accessible space for emotional regulation and mental reset.

Why the Road Trip Works

  • Music directly influences heart rate, breathing, and stress hormones — faster tempos boost alertness, while slower, fluid rhythms ease tension.
  • Anticipating a musical drop or key change releases dopamine, helping counter highway fatigue.
  • Instrumental, rhythmic, or ambient genres offer just enough stimulation to stay engaged without overloading focus.

Matching the Iso-Principle to Your Drive

Trip PhaseEmotional GoalIdeal Genres
Departure / Highway EntryTransition out of daily stressDeep / Progressive House, Synthwave
Peak Scenery / DaytimeHigh energy, elevation, joyDrum & Bass, Uplifting Trance, Indie Rock
Mid-Day SlumpMental fatigue reset, alertnessFunk, Disco, High-BPM Electronic
Sunset / DuskReflection, emotional processingLofi Beats, Chillhop, Ambient / Acoustic

Singing or tapping along engages the body and can snap you out of "highway hypnosis," while passive, mindful listening to instrumental tracks lets your mind unwind. One safety note worth keeping in mind: music should support focus, not distract from it — save the more complex or intense tracks for straightforward highway stretches rather than dense city traffic.

🎮 Video Game Therapy: Apex Legends × Cyberpunk: Edgerunners

Video games have shed a lot of their old stigma in recent years, and modern psychology increasingly views interactive media as a legitimate tool for processing stress. Unlike passive media, games grant direct agency — entering a state of "flow," where skill matches challenge, lets the brain disengage from real-world anxiety through structured problem-solving. Narrative-driven titles also offer a safe space to process heavy themes like grief and burnout, while multiplayer games can function as digital "third places" that ease isolation.

The Crossover Event

After years of fan requests, the "Night City Legends" crossover between Apex Legends and Cyberpunk: Edgerunners arrived as a limited-time event running July 14 – August 4, 2026. Existing Apex characters received high-tier skins modeled on the Edgerunners trio — Sparrow as David, Axle as Lucy, and Rampart as Rebecca — alongside additional Cyberpunk universe skins. The featured mode, Wildcard: Night City E-District, introduces Cyberware mechanics like the Sandevistan dash and Blackwall Breach, plus a "Cyberpsychosis" risk-reward mechanic. Skippy, Cyberpunk's talking smart pistol, returns as a Mythic weapon skin with its original voice lines.

Edgerunners leaned hard into themes of burnout and personal sacrifice, and its finale left many fans describing a genuine "Post-Edgerunners Depression" — the show's bittersweet ending was a real emotional gut-punch for its audience. That's part of why this crossover resonated so strongly: it reunites David, Lucy, and Rebecca in a non-canonical, victorious setting, giving fans a way to enjoy the trio together without the weight of their canon fates.

👨‍👩‍👧 A Family Note on Daycare Hygiene

I'm hearing more and more difficult stories about infants and toddlers getting sick at daycare, and I really think it's important for daycare facilities to take this seriously so kids aren't constantly falling ill. These illnesses can end up disrupting events that matter deeply to families — my own niece has been under the weather, and if she doesn't recover in time, she won't be in an upcoming major family photo, which has been upsetting for me and for my parents as grandparents.

If you run or work at a daycare: please make sure facilities are properly cleaned and that hygiene standards are maintained consistently. It matters more than people realize. Thank you.
