  • Empathy is not the same as compassion. Personally, I’ve found it challenging to navigate complex professional situations due to being quite empathetic by default. That was earlier in my career. Nowadays, I understand the importance of not taking on someone else’s stress, anxiety, etc. and instead focus on being a compassionate leader and colleague that’s better able to help others.

There’s some nuance here to be sure. A quick scan of a Forbes article will not make you better at your job (spoiler alert). That said, read the article, do your own research (eg ‘lateral reading’), and try out your own form of compassionate engagement. See what works for you - and share your learnings with me / everyone!

    Helpful summary from the article:

“Empathy and compassion are very different. They are represented in different areas of the brain. With empathy, we join the suffering of others who suffer, but stop short of actually helping. With compassion, we take a step away from the emotion of empathy and ask ourselves ‘how can we help?’. For leaders, recognizing the differences between empathy and compassion is critical for inspiring and managing others effectively.” #leadership #compassion #emotionalintelligence [LinkedIn]
